24.02.2020 - The Confederation wants to ensure room for manoeuvre for future generations by means of a sustainable fiscal policy. It has been pursuing a strategy of a balanced budget in the medium-term and a low level of debt since the start of 2000. To this end, in 2003 it created the debt brake for ordinary expenditure and in 2010 for extraordinary expenditure. In order to gain control over expenditure growth on a sustainable basis, task priorities are also being regularly examined. Thanks to the debt brake, it has been possible to considerably reduce federal debt. In an international comparison, Switzerland's public finances rank amongst the best in terms of solidity.
