Digitisation is increasingly shaping today's society. The economy, operating processes, finance, administration – digitisation affects all areas of modern life. At the same time, security issues are growing in importance in the context of digitisation, and the role of the state is becoming increasingly significant. The Federal Department of Finance (FDF) is reviewing the prerequisites for expanding powers and implementing digitisation at federal level. The FDF is already active in the area of digitisation:

Paying with mobile phones, trading in virtual currencies, crowdfunding: technological developments are posing a major challenge for traditional financial institutions and start-ups. The regulatory environment for the financial sector should promote competition within the sector and enable market access also for service providers with innovative business models.

Initially, smaller projects within the FDF should gain experience with new technologies and their practical application. A group of experts generates new products under laboratory conditions and prepares them for implementation.

Federal ICT Strategy 2016-2019

The Federal IT Steering Unit (FITSU) ensures implementation of the information and communication technology (ICT) strategy decided by the Federal Council in the Federal Administration.

The Federal Office of Information Technology, Systems and Telecommunication (FOITT), which is also part of the FDF, is the executive body for the entire Federal Administration.

Big Data

Many questions are arising in connection with big data. The expert commission for the future of data processing and data security appointed by the FDF is preparing recommendations for the Federal Council. Taking into account the overall societal dimension, the recommendations are based on the challenges of data processing and data security, as well as the risks and opportunities of the rapid development of information and communication technology (ICT).

The Confederation, the cantons and the communes are pursuing a joint eGovernment strategy. The goal of eGovernment is to make administrative activities as close to the citizen, efficient and cost-effective as possible by using information and communication technology (ICT).
