Digitisation is increasingly shaping today's society. The economy, operating processes, finance, administration – digitisation affects all areas of modern life. At the same time, security issues are growing in importance in the context of digitisation, and the role of the state is becoming increasingly significant. The Federal Department of Finance (FDF) is reviewing the prerequisites for expanding powers and implementing digitisation at federal level. The FDF is already active in the area of digitisation:

The National Cyber Security Centre

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is the Confederation's competence centre for cybersecurity and thus the first contact point for businesses, public administrations, educational institutions and the general public for cyberissues. It is also responsible for the coordinated implementation of the 2018-2022 national strategy for the protection of Switzerland against cyber-risks (NCS).

Swiss Digital Initiative

The Swiss Digital Initiative is intended to encourage companies worldwide to adopt ethical codes of conduct. As an innovative location known for legal certainty, stability and neutrality, Switzerland is predestined to support such an objective.

The Swiss Digital Initiative sees itself as a long-term and sustainable process for securing ethical standards in the digital world. Ueli Maurer, President of the Swiss Confederation, is patron of the initiative which was launched by digitalswitzerland.

Digital public services

The Confederation, communes and cities are strengthening cooperation on setting up and managing "digital public services". In this regard, the Federal Council and the Plenary Assembly of the Conference of the Cantonal Governments of Switzerland (CCG) agreed on a comprehensive project at the beginning of April 2020.

Digitisation platform

Initially, smaller projects within the FDF should gain experience with new technologies and their practical application.

Paying with mobile phones, trading in virtual currencies, crowdfunding: technological developments are posing a major challenge for traditional financial institutions and start-ups. The regulatory environment for the financial sector should promote competition within the sector and enable market access also for service providers with innovative business models.

The Federal Council wants to further improve the framework conditions for companies in the area of blockchain and distributed ledger technology (DLT).
