Federal Cybersecurity Delegate represented Switzerland at International Counter Ransomware Initiative Summit in Washington

Bern, 03.11.2022 - On 31 October and 1 November 2022, the White House brought together 36 countries and the EU for the Second International Counter Ransomware Initiative Summit in Washington. Florian Schütz, the Federal Cybersecurity Delegate, put forward Switzerland's position in the five working groups. He also met with Chris Inglis, the US National Cyber Director, for a bilateral exchange.

Ransomware is one of the most serious cyberthreats for companies and individuals in Switzerland. Cyberattacks with encryption software, followed by ransom demands, are on the rise worldwide. As the criminal groups operate across borders, international cooperation is an important factor in countering ransomware.

To strengthen this cooperation, the International Counter Ransomware Initiative (CRI) was launched in 2021, and five working groups were created. Switzerland is involved in all of the working groups, which focus on the following areas:

  • Improving networks' resilience to ransomware attacks
  • Countering the illicit use of virtual currencies and the financial systems that make ransomware profitable
  • Disrupting the ransomware ecosystem via law enforcement collaboration
  • Enhancing cooperation with the private sector
  • Leveraging the tools of diplomacy

The participating countries discussed the outcomes of the five working groups on 31 October and 1 November 2022. Florian Schütz, the Federal Cybersecurity Delegate, represented Switzerland in the working groups. The participating countries published a joint statement at the end of the summit. During his trip, Florian Schütz also met with Chris Inglis, the US National Cyber Director, for a bilateral exchange.
