Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer with financial sector at roundtable on sustainable finance

Bern, 07.06.2022 - On 7 June 2022 in Bern, Federal Councillor Ueli Maurer received the leaders of Swiss banks, asset managers and financial sector associations for a roundtable on sustainable finance. The meeting focused on the sustainable finance opportunities and developments for wealth management in Switzerland.

Federal Councillor Maurer emphasised that the Swiss financial centre already plays a pioneering role internationally in the area of sustainable finance, but that this position should be steadily strengthened. The aim must be to use sustainable finance to boost competitiveness, thereby creating new jobs and making a significant contribution to achieving the sustainability and climate goals. The Swiss financial centre should be a credible hub for investors who wish to make a positive contribution to the sustainability goals.

Subsequently, the invited CEOs and Chairmen of the Boards of Directors of the large, private and cantonal banks, as well as asset managers and associations, exchanged views on sustainability topics directly related to wealth management. These included transparency at institution level and in investment products, the avoidance of greenwashing (making false or misleading claims about green corporate activities), and dealing with financial climate and biodiversity risks. Topics indirectly related to wealth management were also discussed, such as the significance of CO2 offsetting, the role of institutional investors and the expansion of sustainability consulting. Finally, the roundtable also provided an opportunity to define the next steps and goals to strengthen the Swiss financial centre's claim to leadership in the area of sustainability.
