Public security test for COVID-19 certificate system

Bern, 31.05.2021 - Between now and the end of June 2021, the COVID-19 certificate system will be implemented with the solution of the Federal Office of Information Technology, Systems and Telecommunication (FOITT). The first certificates will be issued gradually in the cantons during a pilot phase set to start on 7 June. The system will be rolled out across Switzerland by the end of June. As it is to provide a very high level of security, it will be subjected to a broad public security test. Effective immediately, the source code of the first version of the Swiss COVID-19 certificate system is available for this public security test.

Intensive work is currently under way on the COVID-19 certificate system, which will be gradually introduced in the cantons from 7 June. The functionalities and handling of the entire system, as well as its security, have to be checked thoroughly beforehand. In addition to the security analyses accompanied by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), the system is now being subjected to an endurance test by other experts and interested persons within the framework of a public security test. Therefore, the source code of the COVID-19 certificate system has now been made publicly available. The security vulnerabilities identified in the course of these tests will be recorded and integrated into development on an ongoing basis.

Effective from today, the National Cybersecurity Centre (NCSC) will collect the corresponding test results, evaluate their contents, prioritise them in terms of their severity and initiate necessary adjustments by the FOITT development team.

All participants can use the form on the NCSC website to enter their detailed test results. In order to stay true to the NCSC's desire for full transparency, the feedback will be regularly updated on the NCSC website and will be publicly accessible.

The Federal Council is expected to provide information on the launch, the technical solution and the functionalities of the COVID-19 certificate system on Friday, 4 June 2021.
