The Federal Council elected Thomas Jordan (born in 1963) – previously Vice Chairman of the SNB Governing Board and Head of Department II – as Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank. He will take up his duties immediately. This election is applicable for the remainder of the current term of office, which terminates on 30 June 2015. In 2004, Thomas Jordan became an Alternate Member of the Governing Board, Chief Investment Officer and Head of the Financial Markets area of the SNB. In 2007, he was appointed Member of the SNB Governing Board, and in 2010 Vice Chairman of the Governing Board.
Also effective immediately and with the same term of office, the Federal Council elected Jean-Pierre Danthine (born in 1950), Member of the Governing Board and Head of Department III, as Vice Chairman of the SNB Governing Board. The Federal Council elected Fritz Zurbrügg (born in 1960), currently Director of the Federal Finance Administration, as a new Member of the Governing Board from 1 August 2012.
In accordance with Article 39 of the National Bank Act, the Bank Council is composed of eleven members who are elected for a four-year term of office. Six members are elected by the Federal Council and five members by the general meeting of shareholders. The Federal Council appoints the President and the Vice President.
Today, the Federal Council re-elected Jean Studer, Cantonal Councillor and Head of the Department of Justice, Security and Finance in the Canton of Neuchâtel, to the Bank Council for the 2012-2016 term of office (1 May 2012 to 30 April 2016) and appointed him as President. Olivier Steimer, Chairman of the Board of Banque Cantonale Vaudoise, was elected by the Federal Council as Vice President, subject to being re-elected to the Bank Council by the general meeting.
